One of the last places that whales are common is called the whale sanctuary. This place is protected by Australian law. But whalers said that they are doing research. Now they freely kill hundreds of whales. The only thing that stands in the whalers and the whales are the sea shepherds. Whom you can read more about below.

There are people who save whales from whalers. The most famous group of people who save whales are known as the sea shepherds. Their ship the Steve Irwin(see Above) has rammed many times into the whaling vessels. They will do what ever they can to stop whaling.

The minke whale is a common target for whalers. It will be on the endangered species list soon.Another target of the whalers is the fin whale.The fin whale is  endangered because of frequent whaling.( see a picture of the fin whale above) Whales are beautiful animals and many are killed for almost no reason. So please don't hunt whales.

Whale hunting was band in 1980. But the law allows a number of whales to be killed each year for scientific research. This number is about 1,000. So the Japanese now say they are doing research.
